Dear Professor Taylor,
I am writing in response to your recent e-mail regarding Domingo Cavallo's appointment as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at NYU Stern.
Professor Cavallo was a visiting professor at NYU Stem for the 1996 -1997 academic
year, and last spring we invited him to return in that capacity. While my predecessor
extended the invitation, I completely support this decision. As former Finance
Minister of Argentina, Professor Cavallo brings a unique perspective to our
business students. NYU Stern is a school that prides itself on bringing the
real world into the classroom, and Professor Cavallo's lectures give our students
the rare opportunity to hear firsthand how economic policy decisions are made
and the implications of those decisions.
Moreover, Professor Cavallo has participated in several open forums held on
the NYU campus. For example, in late November he joined Mario Blejer, former
Governor of the Central Bank of Argentina, for a panel discussion, A Retrospective
on Argentina: Lessons from the Crisis, in addition to students and-faculty,
members of the press were also invited to attend.
I respectfully submit that one of the most important roles the academy has is to offer a forum for the free and open debate of ideas. Professor Cavallo's presence at NYU Stern is in that tradition.
