In a world dominated by the U.S and an earth threatened by globalization, multiple sites of neo- fascism now dot the globe. The rhetoric of the Right is sharp and strident, assaulting the ears of all that is democratic, and often all that is secular. With the rise of oppressive nationhoods, religion and state power often bed together. In our class discussions of the characteristics of fascist performance, many of us could not help but notice its manifestations in different international contexts. While we all now lived in the U.S.A. where these fascist politics were being domestically played out, the troubling resonances 'back home' could hardly be ignored. Presented below are a selection of responses to an assignment on the a specific instance of fascist performance. While these sketches are in no way meant to be an exhaustive analysis of the political situations they discuss, they are offered here rather as vignettes of the similar threats that plague the world. Given the diverse composition of our class and the spectrum of interests and investments we bring to it, these papers are also presented here as a sample of the expanse of our discussions around the issue of fascism. |
