The Maxacalí, on the other hand, appeared to have less experience negotiating such situations. Anecdotes circulated among Encuentro participants about their naïveté –how they did not understand the use of cash money. Following their performance, they were thanked in Spanish, English, and Portuguese by the organizers of the event who invited other indigenous people to present farewell performances. Upon hearing their name, the Maxacalí performers returned to the center of the courtyard and unexpectedly began a second dance sequence.
